Confirmation and Adoption of Minutes It was proposed by Councillor M. Merrigan and secondedby Councillor D. O’Callaghan and agreed that the minutes of the meeting of Dun Laoghaire Area Committee (Municipal Services) meeting held on the 23rd May, 2016 be CONFIRMED and ADOPTED.

“That this Committee in the spirit of community development and in recognition of the great progress and success that Monkstown boxing Club has achieved in recent years call on the Chief Executive, Director of Municipal Services in-conjunction with the Sports Development officers and Community Department to identify an appropriate piece of land which could be disposed through leasehold for the construction of a purpose built Boxing club which would be funded privately and through Capital Sports Grant.”

NAMEPLATES ON LANEWAYS It was proposed by Councillor M. Merrigan and seconded by Councillor S. O’Brien
“That, this Area Committee requests the Chief Executive to confirm whether the new laneway connecting Lower George’s Street and Bentley Villas located between St. Helen’s Court and the Lighthouse Apartments has been taken in charge by the Council and, if so, to explore the possibility of initiating the procedures required to have a nameplate erected on this laneway and, in that regard, that consideration be given by the Memorials Committee to naming this laneway ‘Reddin-Byrne Walk / Cosán Uí Roideáin – Uí Bhroin” in honour of two local men connected with important events and national movements in Irish history, Daniel Reddin (1842-1879) a local member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood who was imprisoned for his involvement in the attempted rescue of Fenian leaders in Manchester in 1867 and who was reportedly very badly treated in custody resulting in his death soon after release in 1879 and James Byrne (1877-1913) who was a local Trade Unionist active in the Dublin Lockout of 1913 and who also died on release in 1913 of injuries received when in prison. The funerals of these men were enormous public events, both widely reported at home and overseas, the former to the Fenian Plot in Glasnevin Cemetery and the latter to Deansgrange Cemetery with an oration by James Connolly.”
